Members of Wisdom Class,
Ladies and gentlemen.
With great pleasure, I welcome you all to this epoch event and I thank all of you for responding to this clarion call to prevent suicide and drug abuse in our community.
It’s not funny that we are still hearing that people ar e committing suicide over nothing, drug abuse is skyrocketing out of control, and little is being done to checkmate this menace.
It’s unfortunate that suicide and drug abuse is simply preventable if a little more effort is put in place.
DEPRESSION AND DRUG ABUSE IS COMPLETELY TREATABLE
Therefore all hands must be on deck to identify victims and bring them for treatment.
The Director General of,The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has asked all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to make drug integrity test an institutional policy for students and form a partnership with the agency to curb drug abuse in schools. It is expected that the University of Abuja, being the ‘University of National Unity’, will be the first public University in Nigeria to adopt the drug integrity test for fresh and returning students of the institution. The Drug Integrity Test is not a punitive measure; rather it is an early detection tool to ascertain an individual’s drug use status for appropriate intervention, and timely treatment and care.
This will also entail that the university will develop a drug policy and make such available to each student. Equally important is the need to create an NDLEA outpost on the campus where we’ll deploy our men to assist the authorities to deter drug dealers and users within the University.”he said
We recommend this measure for identification and rehabilitation of victims because such individuals will never seek medical help but up till now, b
nothing is being done in that regard.
That’s why we are launching a fund for the rehabilitation of identified victims. We have identified many already and some have been rehabilated.
ANYBODY CAN BE A VICTIM OF DEPRESSION TOMORROW, that’s why this approach should be institutionalized to solve the problem of suicide and drug abuse in our society. I therefore want to use this opportunity to make a request to all depressed people to call me, rather than commit suicide. My phone number is 07032461384.
This year, we also want to recognize individuals who have been sympathetic to this cause, people who have excelled in their carriers and have made meaningful contributions to development in the society. Student who distinguished themselves in various endeavor are not left out.
We also want to lend our voice to the Shun Corruption Project of Priests Peace and Justice Initiative led by Dr. Otive Igbuzor.
We call on all and sundry to shun corruption, shun drug abuse, shun examination malpractices, shun sexual molestation and say no to cultism.
We all will suffer the negative consequences if we fail to act today. I therefore enjoin all and sundry to support this noble cause and donate generously to enable us acquire drug testing kits to identify, treat and rehabilitate victims for free.
Thank you one more time for joining us and I wish a us safe journey back home at the end of the program
Thank you and God bless.
Dr. Uche Esegbue
